Blessing Okagbare has won Nigeria’s first medal in Moscow - silver medal in the long jump event final.

The Sapele-born athlete qualified for the final of the Women’s long jump event at the on-going IAAF World Championship in Moscow with a jump of 6.83m, placing second in the qualification behind Great Britain’s Shara Proctor who jumped a distance of 6.85m in her first attempt to automatically qualify for the final. However in the finals last night, she leaped to a distance of 6.99 metres to clinch the silver medal.

Meanwhile, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, the Governor of Delta State, has congratulated Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare for winning a silver medal in the Long Jump event of the 14th edition of the Athletics World Championships yesterday in Moscow Russia.

It was the first time a Nigerian would win a medal in the World Championships since 1999 when Gloria Alozie and Francis Obikwelu won silver and bronze in Hurdles and 200.m respectively in Spain.

This is a great individual feat. Congratulations to her.
