Tyler Perry Fans Go Hard: “The Haves And The Have Nots” Turns Out To Be OWN’s Highest Rated Series Debut…EVER


All that advertising and those commercials with Tyler Perry standing in a suit, talking in a deep voice next to the OWN logo, paid off big time. Why? Because The Haves and The Have Nots, aka, the new Tyler Perry show that looks just like a soap opera you might see on CBS (but with more black people), brought in the highest ratings for a series debuting on OWN. Oprah’s definitely somewhere bankhead bouncing to this news.


According to S&A, the debut episode of the series brought in a whopping 1.77 million viewers, and the second episode, which came on right after the premiere last night, raked in 1.8 million viewers in its 10 p.m. time slot, easily making the show the best debut of any show on Oprah’s young and once struggling network. While the success of the premiere might have a lot to do with the aforementioned advertising, I think we can all agree that it also has a lot to do with the massive following Perry has. Whether the masses love his work or love to hate it, there’s a whole sector of black folks who loved House of Payne, Meet The Browns and For Better or Worse when they were on TBS. And they probably love them some Oprah too, so it makes sense that they would be amped about the partnership between Perry and Oprah, and would flock to the new show.
And if that’s not enough for them, tonight, Perry’s other new show, Love Thy Neighbor, with his popular stage-play character Hattie Mae Love, premieres at 9 p.m.
