Surprises at African Nations Cup Qualifiers

Matches were played saturday and sunday for the final rounds of qualifications for the African Nations Cup holding in South Africa 2013. There were a few surprises but the big guns also were able to make it to the finals. Below is the results from the qualifcations and the countries that qualified.

Uganda 1-0 Zambia (Agg: 1-1)

Zambia win 9-8 on penalties.
The Defender Champions just made it via penalties.

Senegal vs Ivory Coast - match abandoned

The match was abondoned after Ivory Coast scored their second goal via a penalty from Drogba in the 76 minutes. Ivory Coast certain to go through.

Malawi 0-1 Ghana (Agg: 0-3)

Ghana was the first nation to qualify.

Botswana 1-4 Mali (Agg: 1-7)

Mali qualified with a heavy goals aggregate.

Nigeria 6-1 Liberia (Agg: 8-3)

Nigeria scored in the very first minutes and went on to score 5 more goals to qualify. Calabar has become a good home to the Super Eagles.

Tunisia 0-0 Sierra Leone (Agg 2-2)

Tunisia went through on away goals rule. As they were held to a goal-less draw by Sierra Leona at home.

Morocco 4-0 Mozambique (Agg 4-2)

Morocco beat Mozambique to qualify.

Cameroon 2-1 Cape Verde (Agg: 2-3)

The big shock of the qualifers was the elimination of Cameroon, even the return of four time African Footballer of the Year Samuel Eto'o and a change of Coach could not salvage what had been a disaster for the host nation as Cape Verde, a country with a population of about 500,000, after having won the first tie 2-0, strengthened their position after only 22 minutes of the return game when Portuguese-based striker Heldon scored with a free-kick. So Cameroon for the first time, will now miss two African Nations Cup in a row. How are the mighty fallen.

Ethiopia 2-0 Sudan (Agg: 5-5)

Ethiopia qualify on the away goal rule.

Angola 2-0 Zimbabwe (Agg: 3-3)

Angola also qualify on the away goal rule.

Niger 2-0 Guinea (Agg: 2-1)

Niger qualified only for their second African Nations cup after late goals.

Togo 2-1 Gabon (Agg: 3-2)

Togo qualified on goals aggregate.

Equatorial Guinea 2-1 DR Congo (Agg: 2-5)

DR Congo qualifed after having won the first tie by 4 goals to nil.

Burkina Faso 3-1 Central African Republic (3-2)

Burkina Faso qualified on a 3-2 aggregate.

Algeria 2-0 Libya (3-0)
