Say
what you will about Tyler Perry’s “The Haves and The Have Nots,”
but somebody is watching it, so much so that the Oprah Winfrey
Network has doubled its order of episodes for the new show.
Originally, OWN ordered 16 episodes of the series which just
premiered May 28 and now a total of 32 episodes will close out the
season.
According
to a news release, the show’s current cycle will air through
September 3 and new episodes will premiere in early 2014. “The
Haves and the Have Nots,” which follows the complicated dynamic
between the rich and powerful Cryer family and the hired help who
work in their opulent mansion, premiered May 28 and was the highest
rated series premiere in network history.
Since its launch, the
series has become Tuesday night’s #1 original cable series for
women 25-54 (1.42 rating) and is averaging over 1.5 million total
viewers.
In
addition, “The Haves and the Have Nots” is the #1 television show
on Tuesday nights (non-sports) for all African-American women. I have
to admit, I’ve personally gotten caught up in the new TP show as my
Tuesday night, mindlessly entertaining guilty pleasure. It’s a
basic mix of telenovela meets The Family That Preys
meets Imitation of Life and since I like those three entities
individually, combined it’s a win-win-win– sorta kinda. The
bottom line is Tyler Perry is still winning, Oprah is finally
winning, and those people who created a petition to get this show
kicked off of the air are, well, losing.
