There
have been talks by relatives of some of the schoolgirls seized in a mass
kidnapping by Boko Haram demanding that the president meet every one of them
affected by the crisis instead of a selective few.
Some
of these relatives describe a planned visit by the president to a selective few
as offensive.
Taliban
survivor and Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai who was in recently
in Nigeria had pleaded with the president to meet with the parents of the hostages.
One
of the panel of elders Dauda Iliya, a member of the Chibok said:
"It
is embarrassing that the president had to wait for Malala to come all the way
to Nigeria to convince him to meet with us three months after the attack,"
said
"We
deserve a visit by the president," he added, saying that if Jonathan cannot
go to the remote northeastern town for security reasons, he can bring "all
the 219 mothers to meet with him. This meeting should not be selective."
……….
I
do agree that the president should see the parents of those girls abducted and
escapees but at what cost.
Should
he go there knowing that he would be putting his lives, the lives of his
operatives, the Borno State governor and that of the people of chibok in
danger?
What
would be the essence of the visit, to show off or to commensurate with those
who have suffered immensely due to this ordeal or is it just a political
jamboree for image laundry?
The
president has proven that he doesn’t want a laundry of any kind and a
commensuration is what he seeks and therefore for that single reason the
meeting can be arrange anywhere even in Abuja.
In
May Jonathan was alleged to have cancelled an intended trip to visit Chibok but
in truth that trip was never booked, as he was scheduled to travel to Parish
for an official engagement.
Yes
he should go and see them, and yes ASAP but for the right conditions and not
for the reasons the opposition is clamoring for.
