A
UK teenager who documented her trip with Facebook updates has raked up a
staggering bill of £9,000 that’s N2.25M
The
girl who was on holiday in Antigua with her mother was documenting her trip
with regular Facebook updates. Her Stepfather David Mason, who funds the phone,
contacted his daughter to inform her when the network sent him a text saying
she had hit £50 in roaming charges.
Thinking
she had disconnected her phone from the UK network and using WIFI to update her
profile, he didn’t bother to ask her after he informed her of the development
only to discover that she was still in fact connected to the local mobile
provider, resulting in the family paying thousands of pounds in debt.
When
she and her mother returned from the trip, her stepdad got a huge bill for
£5,400 from the network provider and four weeks later another for £3,500. Totaling
£8,900
Mr
Mason, 48, said: 'I was shocked when the first bill for £5,400 arrived.
'The
phone contract was in my name but I was in England at the time and got a
message saying roaming charges had hit £50.
'Orange
asked if I wanted to opt out of roaming charges.
'I
said 'yes' and told Tracey but the phone was still connected to the Jamaica
roaming network without them knowing.
'She
had no idea she was racking up this massive bill.'
Following
the holiday in March, he initially paid off £5,400 of the bill and refused to
pay the rest claiming the mobile phone giant has failed in its duty of customer
care. The network then reduced the charge to £500 - N125,000.
……….
Yes I believed the
phone company failed in its duty too. But wouldn’t it have been more prudent
for her to have just bought a phone in Jamaica and use it for the duration. All
she needed to do was sign into her Facebook account and wala, she is LIVE
