The
middle-aged man, known only as Rudy, admitted to a news reporter he
had been coining it in as a professional beggar by holding a sign
claiming he was a 'homeless vet', despite never having served in the
armed forces.
But
Rudy got his just desserts when Hannah Saunders from WZZM13, fed up
with the increase in professional beggars in Michigan since the
practice of panhandling was declared a 'constitutional right' last
summer, decided to find out who was genuine and who was trying to
pull the wool over generous donors eyes.
She
took to the streets with her film crew and interviewed some of the
people standing on the street corners with various signs pleading
poverty and begging for donations.
They
uncovered a number of phonys who had been telling flat-out lies in
order to persuade passersby to hand over their hard earned cash,
including supposed war veteran Rudy, who claimed he had found his
sign.
He
admitted there were rich pickings to be had with it, particularly on
the July 4 holiday.
He
said: 'This one lady she gave me a $20 bill and said "I'm so
proud of you," and I said "thank you".'
When
they asked if he felt guilty about fooling donors and then spending
his cash on booze, he said he had a clear conscience.
'You
got to make money somehow,' Rudy said.
'It's
better than robbing people and doing drugs as far as I'm concerned.'
So
it's not only in Lagos, this people are even in the U.S of A? WoW!
