Ungrateful or dishonest? Couple complains of expecting twin boys instead of a girl via IVF (is this for real, somebody please pinch me)

A couple who underwent IVF treatment with the hope of having a girl, have told of their 'anger' and 'disappointment' when they found out they were expecting twin boys.

In first person pieces for Babble.com - which have recently come to light - the pair, who write under the pseudonyms Albert and Paula Garland, reveal how they even considered aborting one of the fetuses but decided it was 'too Machiavellian'.

Instead they followed through with the pregnancy and, in the run up to the birth of their boys this August, they said they felt like 'cancer patients with only months to live', not expectant parents.
'My wife and I even both privately admitted that we don’t like the new children, which is of course insane,' Mr Garland wrote.

The couple's musings sparked a furious backlash, with many readers deeming them 'ungrateful', 'selfish' and 'irresponsible'.
'Seriously, suck. it. up,' one commenter wrote. And another added: 'Part of me actually hopes you just wrote this for attention and you are making this whole thing up.

'I’d like to think that no one is really this dishearten over their own "thought out" decisions.'

The Garlands, who already have a young son, said they had been trying to provide him with a sister for nearly two years, which left them 'exhausted' and 'depressed'.
As a last ditch effort they tried artificial insemination - a fertility treatment which places washed sperm directly into the uterus - but with no success.

They then turned to in vitro fertilization and were surprised to discover that it worked first time.
However, their surprise turned to horror as the doctor revealed they had 'two strong embryos.'

MY TAKE. ENOUGH
I am disappointed but I also have to look at things from their point of view. (No I don’t.) This couple are not serious, I am truly disappointed. When has IVF ever promise the ‘sex’ of a baby or didn’t they listen to what the doctor told them. IVF promises nothing, the chances of getting pregnant is less than 25% and that would depend largely on the age of the woman and other factors.

Many have spent millions looking for just one baby and these couple are complaining of having two boys?

Please, here's to a simple solution. Put them up for adoption immediately.

There is no point raising up children you don’t love and wish you hadn't. As you can see, I have tried to be as tactful as I can be despite that fact that this is just ridiculous and a slap on parents without children, especially those who have been trying for years. Many have even tried with IVF and failed. My lord....

God is just so kind, He alone knows why he does these things. Give babies to people who sometimes don't want or appreciate them and denies others who would literally kill to have and nourish them. God knows best.

 IVF AND MULTIPLE BIRTHS

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a process by which an egg is fertilized by sperm outside the body

The fertilized egg or eggs are then implanted in the woman's uterus
One cycle of IVF, which costs anywhere from $12,000 (N1,860,000) to $15,000 (N 2,325,000) or more, takes about two weeks
A woman undergoing IVF has a ten times higher chance of carrying twins or triplets than the natural occurrence.
When multiple fertilized eggs are transferred 25per cent of pregnancies with IVF are twins
The chance of a pregnant woman having natural fraternal twins is just 1.7per cent
Many doctors use more than one egg during IVF to improve chances of success
However, The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) is making efforts on lowering the risk of multiple births in IVF
About 48,000 IVF babies are born each year in the U.S

  1. Agree with you. Put up immediately for adoption to parents unable to have children. They will be thrilled.
