SOUTH African statesman Nelson Mandela was in such a "vegetative state" last week that doctors advised his family to turn off his life support, court documents reveal.
Relatives
are said to have been seriously considering pulling the plug to end
his suffering.
The
94-year-old anti-apartheid hero is receiving treatment for a
recurring lung infection in his fourth hospital stay in six months.
Mandela
– South Africa's first democratically-elected president – remains
in a “critical but stable” condition after nearly a month in
hospital.
In
a legal filing from last week, his doctors said: "He is in a
permanent vegetative state and is assisted in breathing by a life
support machine.
"The
Mandela family have been advised by the medical practitioners that
his life support machine should be switched off.
“Rather
than prolonging his suffering, the Mandela family is exploring this
option as a very real probability.”
We will always know Madiba as the father of Africa. If he is suffering as they say, letting him go would not be a sign of weakness but of bravery. Please make the right decision.
