P.M. NEWS this morning
reported that a 12 year old boy was beaten to death because he was complaining of
hunger.
According to a police report, Mr. Paul Obiefule and his wife
allegedly beat the 12 year-old boy, Onyedikachi Mbanozo, to death at their home
at 22, Omitola Street, Agege, Lagos.
The little boy was living with them when the incident happened
at about 2.30p.m. on the eve of Children’s Day.
According to Ngozi Braide, the Lagos State Police Command
spokesperson, the police are yet to determine what led to the tragic incident
as it is currently being investigated.
She said Obiefule and his wife are in police custody and are
undergoing interrogation.
One of the couple’s neighbours, Mr. Mukaila Maliki, alleged
that, the boy had in the past been beaten to a state of coma and had to be
hospitalised for a month.
“Paul Obiefule was arrested by policemen from Railway Police
Station, Agege, and interrogated in connection with the beating of little
Onydikachi, for a week before he was released during that first incident,” said
Maliki.
According to an eye witness, on the fateful day, 26 May, when
the deceased, Onyedikachi was beaten to death, Obiefule was alleged to have
taken him to hospital for treatment after the boy fainted, and on his way
back he claimed the boy was being treated at undisclosed hospital.
However, the next morning (yesterday), suspicious neighbours
were said to have confronted Obiefule’s wife about the whereabouts of the
little Onyedikachi.
She reportedly told the neighbours that the deceased was inside
the room. When questioned further, she alleged that the deceased was discharged
the previous night.
Sensing that something did not just add up to the story they
were being told about the boy, the neighbours promptly alerted the police.
Obiefule, who was said to have been spotted drinking, had
to be brought home by the neighbours before the arrival of police from Pen
Cinema Police Station.
When the police arrived at their home, the corpse of the boy was
discovered under the bed. The policemen immediately arrested the couple and
took them along with the corpse to the station.
In another incident, a father simply called Bright, beat his son
to death with an iron belt for allegedly stealing N1,000.
The incident happened at 6, Olarenwaju Street, Oregun, Ikeja,
Lagos on Monday.
According to a police report, the victim was said to have been
rushed to Divine Private Hospital at Lawal Street also in Oregun where he was
confirmed dead.
Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide,
confirmed the incident and said the matter is being investigated at the
Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.
What is happening, has the violent now shifted to children from women, this can not be happening. Any violence against children and women must be condemned in the strongest term possible. It is wickedness to punish a child beyond what is necessary whether that child is yours or not. Plain wickedness.
