3 feared dead as flyover collapses in Delta

Three workers have been feared dead following the collapse of a pile pit on them during the construction of a flyover at the popular Inter-Bau Roundabout in Asaba yesterday. Work has currently stopped as workers protest of alleged insensitivity of the management of the contracting firm CCC Limited.

The affected workers, who were feared dead were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre by Officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

Eyewitness giving account said, the pile pit with a depth of over 20 feet and designed to hold the beams on which the flyover rests, collapsed on the victims at about 11 am.

The protesting workers are aggrieved because the management is compelling them to go back to work in spite of the tragic incident and without protection when they are aware that particular structure could cave in at any time.

They even complained that one of their staff lost his arm and the management did not show concern and two others had died in the line of duty due to lack of adherence to safety regulations and the management never deem it fit to attend their burial ceremonies.

“They are taking us for granted. Imaging what has just happened to those people who were almost buried in the pit. Instead of trying to save their lives, they are telling us to go back to work.”
The way construction workers are treated in Nigeria is appalling and leaves much to be desired. The government has to do something about it. I doubt if they have any pension cover.
