Customs Officials seize Military Uniforms, Bullet Proof Jackets, and Boots at Lagos Port imported by civilian

The Nation reported that the Area of Comptroller, Mr Folorunsho Adegoke on Monday, June 16, 2014 reportedly intercepted military uniforms, bullet proof jackets, boots and other dangerous items at the Lagos Port.

The items were discovered at the Terminal Multipurpose Service Limited (PTML), Tin-Can Island Port, Lagos.

Now this is where the story takes a rather funny turn. The alleged importer of the Cargo, one Mr. Emmanuel Eko, who was arrested at the terminal on Monday during routine examinations claimed to be a member of the British Army but presented a Nigeria Passport and wait for this.

This same Eko had been arrested before at the command for disguising as a Nigerian Army officer.

Included in the item intercepted were, camouflage uniforms, military jackets, military helmets, berets, boots, rain coats, armoured jackets, communication radio jackets, face masks, ear protectors and many others.

What I don’t understand about this is, how come a man that was once arrested for impersonating a Nigerian Army Officer be allowed to go and now, this same man is importing weapons fit to fight a war. When the Nigerian Police or military arrest suspects, what kind of intelligence is gathered and how is such a suspect released without monitoring to ensure they don’t do worse things than they had done before.

If these consignments were not intercepted, in whose hands would they have ended up? And how sure are we that this same man won’t be released again. It's obvious that this man is a front for some big interest and that explains why he seem to be able to get out of arrest so easily.

Naija, so so unfortunate, we are playing with our destiny. Corruption has eaten so deep. God help us.
