There
are reports that, current Nigerian national football team coach, Stephen Keshi
has agreed a two-year deal with the South African Football Association (SAFA)
to take over the coaching job of Bafana Bafana immediately after the ongoing
World Cup in Brazil.
A
source close to the coach and the NFF confirmed the news that Keshi would stop
being Super Eagles manager after the mundial, since he had accepted to take
the offer from South Africa.
It
is said that, Keshi would head to Jo’burg straight from Brazil to sign the
dotted lines and be unveiled by the South Africans once he is through with the
World Cup assignment with Nigeria.
South
Africa last month sacked Bafana Bafana manager, Gordon Igesund after their
friendly against Australia. “I can confirm to your that the deal between Keshi
and SAFA has been signed and sealed. He is going to South Africa immediately
after the World Cup. The South Africans are impressed with what he has done
with the Super Eagles and want him to turn around the fortunes of Bafana
Bafana,” the source said.
If
this is true and a very big “if” it would be a major loss for Nigeria and a
serious gain for SAFA. Keshi is a very good coach that does not know how to
make noise and am aware the NFF has tried to make life very unbearable for him.
I
remember during the Nation’s Cup how the NFF went ahead and bought return
tickets for the team even before we played Ivory Coast. The NFF has shown him
little respect and never really believed he could do the same job they
hired in for.
Coach Stephen Okechukwu Keshi won the Nations Cup both as Captain of the Super Eagles and Coach, becoming the only Nigerian to do that.
If
it’s true, I wish him the best. He sure deserves it.
