PHOTO: Life With Triplet!

What’s even more precious than a newborn baby? Three newborn babies. But cuter doesn’t translate to easier. Stacy Christian and her husband Spencer were in for a big surprise when they discovered they were expecting triplets.

I asked the mum from Hawaii for an interview to dish on all the details, from pregnancy to birth, NICU and life at home with three newborns.

“The hardest part was the mental aspect,” Stacy said. “When I found out it was triplets, I read as many books, blogs, and websites I could get my hands on. I wanted to know everything there was to know. While that was incredibly helpful, it also made me very aware of just how risky the pregnancy would be. There were so many things that could go horribly wrong. So staying mentally at ease for the duration of the pregnancy was a challenge.”

At 33 weeks and two days pregnant, Stacy gave birth to her triplets: Nash, Desmond and Audrey, who were soon breathing and eating on their own after some time in the NICU. After almost a month, it was time to go home—Where the real fun began.

Stacy is breastfeeding all three babies by tandem feeding two, then passing them off to be burped by her mum and husband, while feeding the third. Then they all burp, feed, and change the babies and the triplets usually go right back to sleep.

“So far, it’s actually been pretty manageable,” Stacy started. “Now don’t get me wrong, the ONLY reason I can say that is because my mum is here to help. She’s been incredible, and completely necessary to maintaining my sanity.”

Stacy, who already has a two-year-old daughter, would never claim that being the mum of triplets is easy, however she admits for now, it’s easier than she thought it would be.

“The hardest part is definitely the lack of sleep,” Stacy said. “I’m realising just how hard of a baby my first daughter was. She was colicky, and hardly slept as a newborn. It was so overwhelming and exhausting for me. I remember so many times wondering how parents had more than one child! I was so scared that I would have three babies like my daughter and lose my mind. Thank goodness that’s not the case. Only one of the three are like her, but this time around, I know what to expect and how to handle it.”

Though jumping from a family of three to a family of six hasn’t been easy, it’s been full of love and of course, lots of cuteness.
