Dora Akunyili: Nigerian Medical Association calls U.S. Diagnosis Pathetic

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has described as pathetic the diagnostic recommendations made by the United States medical doctors for late former Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Dora Akunyi.

NMA President, Dr. Lawrence Kayode Obembe in a press conference said:
It is very pathetic; diagnosis was carried out on Akunyili in Nigeria but like everything in Nigeria, they said go and confirm in the U.S. or U.K. There, they said there was nothing wrong with her, but now it is a different story.

“This is why we have been advocating that every Nigerian should have a medical doctor; through health insurance and community health coverage, we can prevent such cases from happening,” he stated.

Doctors in Nigeria had diagnosed that she had cancer but she decided to travel abroad for a second opinion and her doctors in the U.S. countered the diagnoses of the Nigerian doctors saying she was all good.

Family sources however disclosed that Dora died of complications arising from uterine cancer.

“Cancer of the womb (Uterus) is a common cancer that affects the female reproductive system. It is also called uterine cancer and endometrial cancer. Abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most common symptom of womb cancer.
If you are through the menopause, any vaginal bleeding is considered to be abnormal. If you have not yet been through the menopause, unusual bleeding may include bleeding between your periods. You should see your GP as soon as possible if you experience any unusual vaginal bleeding. While it is unlikely that it is caused by womb cancer, it is best to be sure.”

Dr. Jubril Abdullahi, President of National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) said, Dora’s life would have been saved if the advice by the Nigerian medical team that monitored Akunyili had been taken and the operation recommended carried out.

She was without a doubt, one of the bravest individual, not just woman I have ever seen.
