The real reason why Apple pulled out $3 billion to acquire Beats has now been revealed.
Teenagers actually love Beats
headphones.
A recent survey conducted by Statista showed that Beats headphones
are by far the favorite brand of headphones for America teenagers. In fact more
than 46% of all teens surveyed said they preferred Beats headphone to other
while more than 25% said they preferred Apple’s – no other brand of headphones
scored higher than 10%. In other words, now that Apple has acquired Beats, it
seemingly has the teenage market for headphones cornered.
While this might not seem like a
huge deal at first, it’s definitely a way for Apple to draw the young crowd
into its ecosystem — let’s say that if you buy a pair of Beats headphones, you
get a discounted subscription to the Beats Music streaming service on your
iPhone. Or maybe Apple could package in Beats headphones as an add-on for people
who are trading in their old iPhones and buying new ones.
Either way, this probably isn’t
the biggest reason why Apple decided to make its biggest acquisition ever
but it wouldn’t be surprising if it was part of the company’s thinking.
Personally, I think it was one of their main reasons. Teenagers like it, celebrities endorse it.
Not only did Apple buy Beats, but
they also brought into the Apple fold, top Beats executives Jimmy Lovine and Dr.
Dre. To me, this is without a doubt one of the best acquirsitions Apple will
ever do.
Celebrities of all race, both in the movie and sport industries
endorses Beats as their headphones and many can be seen wearing them or hanging them around their necks.
NBA Miami Heat player LeBron James have been known to wear them around his neck during post match interviews and also boxing Champion Floyd Mayweather just to name a few. It has therefore become a cultural item especially among blacks and not just a headphone. Many wear it as an accessory. A must wear to show a particular class.
Just on Friday 30 May, George Groves wore them around his neck during his weigh-in in his boxing match for the IBF and WBA super-middleweight title match against IBF and WBA super-middleweight champion Carl Froch.
